If you’re looking to buy a new water heater or replacing an old one and you’re not sure what type of water heater suits your home best, Deer Valley Plumbing can help! There are many differences between water heaters including price, lifespan, power sources, and maintenance checks. Having a water heater that not only suits the size of your house and it’s residents, but also the area that you live in can be very beneficial to your water bill every month. Here are four types of water heaters we recommend checking out

Conventional Storage Water Heater

This is the most common type of water heater that includes an insulated storage tank that holds anywhere between 30 and 80 gallons of heated water. It’s lifespan is 10 to 15 years on average and is capable of being powered by many sources like natural gas, electricity, oil, or liquid propane. This type of water heater requires regular intervals of maintenance that include draining and flushing the water heater twice a year because of built-up minerals. You also have to have the pressure relief valve tested often to ensure it’s functionality.

Electric Heat Pump Water Heaters

Electric heat pump water heaters work much differently than even normal electric water heaters. It is designed to utilize the heat that it draws from the air to heat the water in it’s tank. It’s much more energy efficient than a conventional water heating system and has the same lifespan and similar cost. It’s wonderful for places with hot climates like Arizona, but is known to struggle during harsher winter months when you really need it.

Tankless Water Heaters

Also known as instantaneous water heaters, this type of water heater has huge energy cost savings because it only heats water when you want it to. This is useful because you aren’t paying for constantly heated water and if you use it sparingly, your water bill will reflect that. Unfortunately, these water heaters have a low flow rate, moving 2-5 gallons per minute and cannot be used if you have two appliances that need hot water at the same time. This water heater does have a longer lifespan of 20 years, but are much more expensive that conventional water heaters. So if you are living alone and are looking for a long lasting water heater that only requires one annual maintenance cost, this heater will be best for you!

Solar Water Heaters

Just like the electric heat pump water heaters, this type of water heater is great for Arizona residents because it is powered by the sun. Every solar water heater includes a solar collector and an insulated storage tank. This is installed on your roof or in the yard, depending on the location of your house. This heater has a lifespan of 15 to 20 years but may require a number of maintenance inspections, and are generally expensive to install. If you live in Arizona and want an energy efficient heater, this option will definitely pay itself back in no time.
