The winter months are coming up fast and you might be thinking, “I live in Arizona, I don’t need to do anything but the regular maintenance for my pool.” You would be surprised to find out that even in Arizona there are certain steps you need to take to keep your pool in good shape. Following these steps can help you to avoid potential issues that can cause costly repairs later.

Test The Chemical Levels

The first step you will want to take is to test the water’s chemical levels in your pool before actually closing it down. This will give you the opportunity to adjust those levels to the proper state. Remember that you are avoiding scale buildup and corrosion that can occur while the pool isn’t in use. If you don’t know what the proper levels are, we’ve provided an idea for you below.

Alkalinity: 7.2 – 7.6 PH level
A PPM of 80 -120
175 – 250 PPM of Calcium hardness
1 – 3 PPM Chlorine level.

Have It Cleaned

After checking the levels listed above it is important to get that pool as clean as possible. If you do not want to pay someone to do it for you, make sure you brush and vacuum the bottom and sides as well as clean the tile and vinyl for oil and scum lines. You will also want to set your filter to waste bypassing sand during the vacuum process. Also, don’t forget to use a clarifier so your water will be clear.

Winterizing Kit

It may seem obvious but you will also need to make use of a winterizing kit during those winter months to keep your levels right. Keep the skimmer, filter, and pump basket cleaned and take unused product from the chlorinator. Keep the D.E. grids and cartridge filter elements hosed and clean after being sprayed with filter cleaner. You may also want to backwash the sand filters. Make sure your water level is lower than the skimmers and returns and then simply place a cover over your pool. By this time you’ll be all set for the winter!
