Key Terms When Buying Energy Efficient Water Heaters

If you’ve already ventured into the energy efficient water heater world then you’ve noticed a few key terms that keep popping up, but do you know what they mean? It’s helpful to know what you’re looking at so you feel confident buying the right unit for your home. It’s also important to have at least a small understanding of water heaters so that you don’t overbuy (or get oversold) a unit that exceeds your needs, after all, you’re trying to save money here.

  1. Type: Electric. Gas. Tank. Tankless. Your home came with an established system, either electric or gas. You probably know what you have based on the utility bill that you pay each month, however, if you are unsure, call a professional to take a look. Also, heating systems have either a tank where hot water is stored before circulating through the house or a tankless system which heats the water as it passes through the unit into the house.
  2. Flow: Flow indicates how much water can be pushed through the system. This number is calculated in gallons per hour (GPH) for tank systems and gallons per minute (GPM) for tankless ones.
  3. Energy Factor: Energy Factor is based on the amount of hot water produced per unit of fuel consumed over a typical day. The higher the energy factor, the more efficient the water heater.
  4. Utility Cost: Utility costs are based on US EIA national averages of Electricity ($0.0125/kWh), Natural Gas ($13.50/1000 ft3), and Propane ($3.00/gal).
